Why my jaw hurts?

Jaw pain can be caused by several problems. Tooth cavities, infections or abscesses, cracks, impacted wisdom teeth, jaw fractures or tumors can cause pain. What is TMJ?

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ),  is the joint between our lower jaw and head, which allows our jaw movements. The lower jaw is connected to the skull with many tendons and muscles.

TMJ Pain

 Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) pain refers to the discomfort and pain experienced in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. It can range from mild to severe and may occur on one or both sides of the face. TMD pain can be characterized by various symptoms, including jaw stiffness, difficulty opening or closing the mouth, clicking or popping sounds in the jaw joint, headaches, earaches, and facial pain.

Causes

TMJ pain can be attributed to various factors such as stress, internal derangements, trauma, inflammatory diseases like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, infections, and tumors. However, it is important to note that the majority of jaw-related pain is commonly caused by internal derangements and muscle pain.

Sings and Symptoms

 The most prevalent indicators of a TMJ problem are pain, difficulties with chewing and yawning, limited mouth opening, popping or clicking sounds during jaw movement, and muscle stiffness. Additionally, some individuals may experience crunchy sounds within the jaw joint. These symptoms often serve as key signs that prompt further evaluation for a potential TMJ issue.

Effect on on our daily life

 The presence of pain, difficulties in chewing and yawning, and limitations in mouth opening can significantly impact our ability to eat and speak, leading to a decline in our overall quality of life and affecting our social interactions. Sleep disturbances can further exacerbate these issues. Moreover, recurrent TMJ problems can contribute to heightened stress, anxiety, and even depression. It is crucial to address TMJ problems promptly to minimize their impact on our well-being and mental health.
